Supper Music

Here’s a funny story for everyone… Last night the hubby and I decided to grab a bite to eat at Grandy’s. We ordered our food and sat down to eat… as we are enjoying our dinner and savoring the tasty rolls we were entertained by oldies over the speaker system. I’ve been known to be a human jukebox (for some unknown reason I was blessed with the talent to memorize and know most of the words to most songs and sometimes who sings them). I grew up listening to a very eclectic collection of music ranging from oldies to christian to bluegrass to country to hip hop to classical. And if I hear a song one time I seem to remember the words. Back to the story… so we are sitting there and I hear an oldie that I recognize and start singing the lyrics

“… so I hear the guitar player say… Vamoos.. Jose’s on his way… and as I walked away I could hear her say to Jose (ay..ay)…. come a little bit closer you’re my kind of man. So big and so strong. Come a little bit closer, I’m all alone and the night is so long…” Etc… those of you that know the song know the rest of it.

Anyway, Gary looks at me and he says “No Way?… really? You know this song?”  A few minutes later in our meal we are sitting there chit chatting about the day and the song “It’s my party” comes on and I start humming and singing along. Gary enjoys quizzing me and he says “Who sings this?” With a confident smile I reply “Leslie Gore” (I think other people have recorded it, but this was the version sung by Leslie). I guess he wanted to check and see if  I was right because he whips out his i-phone and scrolls to the application that tells you who’s singing the song. For those of you that don’t have an I-phone (which includes me)… this application is one where you can hold the I-phone up to the speaker and it will pick up the song and search it’s database and tell you who sings it and when it was recorded.

So, the music is too faint for the phone to pick it up so Gary gets up from the table and goes over to the speaker in the ceiling and holds his phone up to it… I’m sure the other 3 people in the restaurant thought we were crazy. Finally, his phone recognizes it and he sits back down… it’s searching the database…. then it comes up with an answer that’s way off base (some other oldie, I forget the name now). So, Gary gets up again to go hold his phone up to the speaker. People are now starting to wonder what we’re up to. He sits back down… still doesn’t bring up the right song. So, he decides to google it. His I-phone also has a google application where all you have to do is press a button and tell the phone what you want to look up and it finds it for you… like a voice-activated google. So he presses the button and holds the phone up to his face and with a smirk he loudly says “Who sings It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to?” I couldn’t help but laugh. First off, he says it louder than the appropriate restaurant voice level. You all know what I’m talking about… there’s a code… a certain level of noise that a table should make at a restaurant and he broke the unwritten code. :)  Secondly, I’m laughing because I thought he would’ve stopped at “It’s my party”… but instead he says 7 more words. I’m sure other restaurant patrons thought it was really funny to see this young masculine man googling “who sings it’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to”.  So I’m laughing pretty hard at this point and finally google returns the results. Leslie Gore. Gary locks his phone, puts it away and says “Yep, Leslie Gore” and smiles.

The dinner was delicious… and this was only 5 minutes of the entire meal… we also heard some Elvis, Diana Ross and a few other one hit wonders. We talked about lots of other stuff too and throughout the whole meal we ended up with lots of laughs, a few tears and some incredible fried okra.

A few oldies, but goodies, for you….

You know you inherited the music skills from Papaw! He is the same way about songs, now he forgets and can’t remember every word of a song, so he has me google what he remembers and bring him the rest of the words, if it isn’t the right version he knows what ISN’T right! One day you will pick up a guitar and want to play it or a Mandolin, like me! As I was scrolling down I just saw the top of Garys head, and before I got to the bow tie, I thought he was a girl with a pony tail! That is how Lillian could look!!!!! she will be so cute, and then there was beautiful Lindsey in that pretty smocked dress I made… you were beautiful from the first day I saw you, and always will be! P. S. I know that song too! We just always listened to music, it does the body, soul, and mind good! I told you to start listening to calming baby tunes!!!
